Feel-Good Movies to Fight Off Spring Blues

By Cierra Holder on April 7, 2017

Spring quarter is in full swing and there is a lot to get done, but with the dreary spring weather, it can sometimes be difficult to put the pep in your step. So how do you go about pulling yourself out of that rut? A bumping dance party of one in your dorm? Perhaps a Ben and Jerry’s binge? Or my personal favorite, a feel-good movie marathon?

To get you started, or to widen your library of favorites for a quality marathon, here’s a list of feel-good movies recommended by fellow college students:

–Note: The order holds no particular relevance to the quality of feels associated with the movie.–

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)

What better way to loosen up from the pressures of school than by ditching class with Ferris Bueller? This classic will leave you laughing, no matter how many times you’ve seen it before.

Available on: Netflix DVD

Lilo and Stich (2002)

A Disney classic that will put you in a more tropical state of mind. A lovely blend of laughs, bonding moments, Elvis songs, and the aftermath of Sitch’s destruction may leave you wanting to call home to check in with your family.

Available on: Netflix, along with its sequel

The Fundamentals of Caring (2016)

Not your traditional feel-good drama but this Netflix original from last year has a little something to motivate everyone. It’s a wonderful story about coming to terms with yourself and your past, but if swearing is not up your alley, you may want to skip this one.

Available on: Netflix

The Princess Bride (1987)

Does this one need to be explained? From amazing one-liners to a heartfelt lover story, The Princess Bride has it covered. What’s not to love about this classic?

Available on: Netflix DVD

Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989)

Apparently, the late ’80s was a good time for feel-good films. This Studio Ghibli film spins a lovely coming of age story that will put a pep in your step, especially if you’ve recently struck out on your own like the loveable protagonist and witch in training, Kiki.

Available on: Netflix DVD

Pride and Prejudice

Now there’s been a few renditions of this Jane Austen classic. Personally, I prefer the 2005 version but there’s nothing wrong with the others, as they all tell the tale of upper-class drama, illicit romances, two prideful souls and a handsome Mr. Darcy. There’s no room for complaints with this 1813 classic.

Available on: Netflix DVD (The 2005 version)

Chef (2014)

If you’re looking for more great family building movies, Chef is a must, featuring a complicated but loving father-son relationship that allows lead chef Carl Casper to find himself amidst the turmoil in his life. This also puts a fun twist on the cringe-worthy attempts at the older generation learning to use social media. Be warned though, if swearing is not your cup of tea you may want to skip this one.

Available on: Netflix

Marley and Me (2008)

Cute dogs and great family vibes: what more could you want from a movie? A happy ending? Nah, those are overrated.

Available on: Netflix DVD
